Mama’s Apple pie

This is my all time favorite apple pie! I grew up making this with my mom (and brother if he was around the kitchen - it’s one of his favs too) it’s such a nostalgic dessert for me, but the no fuss crust / crumble always has me going back for seconds, it’s just SO GOOD. The hardest part to making this pie is peeling apples, but i’m sure you could even skip that step if you really wanted to. This apple pie has limited ingredients - just the basics - however everything comes together in the most delicious way. There is a flour, butter, sugar crust, granny smith apples, sugar, and cinnamon with some water. That’s it! You need to try this one!

I have made this apple pie with honeycrisp apples and it comes out great too! Use a firm apple that will hold its shape while baking, you could even do a granny smith / honeycrisp apple mix I’m sure. Have fun with it! This is truly a family recipe that you can get everyone around the table with, it’s such a classic. Plus kids love helping make the crust and filling!

Mama’s Apple Pie

Ingredients

Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened

Filling:

  • 3 cups green apples, peeled and sliced (5 small apples or 4 large apples)

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a large bowl mix together the crust ingredients, until a crumbly texture is achieved. You can use a pastry blender or two butter knives to achieve this. Take 3/4 cup of the crust mixture out and set to the side, then press the rest into a deep dish pie plate

  • In a large bowl mix all the filling ingredients together really well. Then lift the apples out, make sure to wash your hands, and put them evenly in the crust. Pour the juice evenly over the top of the apples, making sure to get all the sugar out of the bowl. Sprinkle the remaining 3/4 cup of crumbs over the top and bake at 425 for 20 minutes, then turn down the heat to 350 degrees and bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool and serve with ice cream
